The Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry recently conducted a market survey at Idumota Market, one of the largest markets in Lagos, Nigeria.

During the visit, it was observed that the majority of imports in this market originate from North America, Asia, and Europe. In an effort to promote intra-African trade, the Chamber engaged with traders, encouraging them to source products from Africa and support African industries. The survey revealed significant opportunities in various sectors, including dairy, fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG), sausages, tea, coffee, textiles, and packaging.

Additionally, a visit to local supermarkets provided further insight into the market scope, and it was encouraging to find Kericho Gold Tea stocked on supermarket shelves. This demonstrates that African brands can successfully penetrate the Nigerian market, which presents vast potential given the country’s large population of approximately 220 million people.

One of the major challenges noted in accessing this market is the logistics of transporting products to West Africa. Addressing this barrier will be crucial in enhancing trade between African nations and ensuring a steady supply of quality products to the Nigerian market.
