In a collaborative effort with the Vilnius Chamber of Commerce, Industry, and Crafts (VCCIC) from Lithuania, the Kenya National Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KNCCI) recently launched the “Skills 4 Women and Youth in Kenya” program, an ambitious 24-month initiative designed to empower young entrepreneurs and women-led SMEs.
The program, unveiled at the KNCCI headquarters at Telkom Plaza, aims to support 120 SMEs by equipping them with essential digital and business skills. Its core objective is to enhance these SMEs’ global competitiveness, promote gender equity, and address the digital divide that often limits access to valuable business resources and market opportunities.
The Skills 4 Women and Youth program addresses critical gaps in digital literacy and business acumen, aiming to enhance the productivity and resilience of SMEs in Kenya. Through a series of targeted training sessions, the program provides participants with the tools needed to thrive in an increasingly digital and interconnected world. The training modules are specifically crafted to improve digital literacy, introducing participants to practical applications of technology in business operations, marketing, and global communication. Additionally, the program incorporates essential business development skills, which will enable SMEs to improve management practices, streamline operations, and effectively engage with customers in the digital space.
A unique feature of the program is the provision of consultancy, coaching, and mentorship services to a selected group of 20 SMEs. These SMEs will receive personalized guidance from seasoned industry experts, who will work closely with them to address specific business challenges, refine growth strategies, and provide insights on market trends. This mentorship component adds significant value by offering tailored advice and expertise, which are often critical for scaling businesses and ensuring long-term sustainability. By aligning these SMEs with accomplished professionals, the program offers a hands-on approach to skill development and practical application, helping participants to better understand industry standards and adapt accordingly.
The involvement of the SMEs in the program’s inaugural meeting provided an opportunity for valuable exchange, enabling them to voice their unique perspectives and specific needs. This dialogue has paved the way for a responsive and adaptable training approach that can cater to the diverse challenges faced by women and youth entrepreneurs in Kenya. By fostering this level of engagement, KNCCI and VCCIC are actively working to ensure that the program addresses the most relevant and pressing needs of these SMEs, making the initiative both impactful and participant-driven.
The Skills 4 Women and Youth in Kenya program represents a significant commitment to fostering innovation, entrepreneurship, and inclusive growth within Kenya’s business landscape. By addressing the skills gap, promoting digital inclusion, and supporting gender equity, this initiative aligns with Kenya’s broader economic development goals and strengthens the role of SMEs in driving the country’s progress. Ultimately, this partnership between KNCCI and VCCIC underscores a shared vision of empowering entrepreneurs, reducing barriers to entry in the global market, and creating a more equitable business environment for women and youth in Kenya. This strategic initiative is not only a step toward building a stronger SME sector but also a testament to the transformative power of international collaboration in driving sustainable economic growth.
The project is financed by the Lithuanian Development Cooperation and Humanitarian Aid Fund.
